Yankee Candles? Why not get the best!

Few stories of businesses are as truly American as the story of the Yankee Candle Company.

Step back in time to Christmas, 1969. Mike Kittredge was just 17 years old. His family was poor and he couldn’t buy his mom a present. He made his first candle, intended as a gift for his mom, from some crayons he had. A neighbor bought it from him, giving him enough money to make two candles instead – one for his mom and one to sell. Yankee Candle was born.

The company has gone on to become the most recognized names in the candle business in the U.S. and not only sells more candles, but donates a large amount of its profits to charitable organizations and fundraisers. In fact, the company had donated about $15 million to more than 12,000 organizations annually through their fundraising wing.

Yankee Candle is well known for its passion for fragrance and has brought more than 150 fragrances to market over the years, by far the most of any candle company. But rather than rest on their laurels, they went on to expand their product line to include seasonal and special scent candles, fragrance products for the home, car fresheners and candle accessories.

Yankee Candle products are sold online and through company owned retail outlets. The company also has a growing network of retailers through their wholesale division. This includes more than 19,000 retailers in the U.S. alone. All Yankee Candle candles are made by expert chandlers in Massachusetts. Though the factory is state-of-the-art, their products have a hand crafted look to them.

The Yankee Candle difference

Part of the reason is that the chandlers of Yankee Candle are part of its heritage. The secrets and techniques of these chandlers are passed down from generation to generation. It is part of the Yankee Candle culture and part of its pride in making top quality products characterized by superior craftsmanship.

The company continually keeps abreast of pop culture and trends in fashion, fragrance and society. Many of their best ideas are ones that evoke fond memories of the past, of simpler times, or experiences people relate to in everyday life, such as the arrival of fall or the fragrance of the beach.

But knowing the trends is only party of Yankee Candle’s secret. The company conducts extensive research and then testing to ensure that each fragrance is correct and never artificial. They are screened, reviewed and tested by some of the leading fragrance professionals in the business; much like gourmet coffee or a fine wine is tested. It has to be exactly right before it is ever released to the market under the Yankee Candle Company name.

The Ultimate candle: Yankee Candle

Of course, any consumer who has purchased a Yankee Candle knows that it stands head and shoulders above the others in the marketplace. The candles are long lasting and the fragrance consistent and instantly recognizable. Even if you can’t name a particular scent, you will almost certainly recognize where you first experienced it, such as a meadow, a forest, or a tropical island. The goal is to create an experience for all the senses, not just for the nose.

While some classic favorites continue to stand the test of time, new ones are constantly being introduced. What’s more, Yankee Candle also brings back some old favorites from time to time to create fond memories to lifelong customers and to introduce some potential favorites to an entirely new generation of Yankee Candle customers.

And while fragrances are essential to the Yankee Candle experience, so is innovation. The company is continually bringing new products online, such as their Travel Tins or their line of fragrances for cars, which work equally well in any small spaces, from the RV to the locker room.

They have also introduced their signature collections – themed lines that add beauty to your home while expanding your ability to enjoy the complete line of Yankee Candle products. Homeowners and decorators will love the wide selection of designs and themes in the collection, from wine and rustic themes to more modern interpretations in sandstone and soapstone.

One thing’s for sure. Yankee Candle is a true American born, American made success story and its legendary commitment to quality and its passion for fragrance has led the company to create one of the greatest lines of candle products in the country, if not the world.

Only time will tell exactly where the future will lead Yankee Candle. But given its remarkable history, its innovation, its commitment to meeting its customers’ needs, its legendary charitable giving program and its support of thousands of retailers across the country, one can rest assured that Yankee Candle Company will continue to be a force in the business for many, many years to come.
